Abstract: As an answer to the exportation of the concept of “development”, identified with the capitalist model of production and consumption, a series of approaches that draw our attention to the degradation of the natural resources are being generated. As a consequence, the number of designated natural protected areas in the world has considerably grown in the past decades. Declaring these areas as protected also restricts the use of their natural resources. Such restrictions can stand in the way of the social and economic development of communities that have lived in these now protected territories for centuries and relied on their wealth to survive. Therefore, it is a challenge for the international community to encourage the local population to take part in the planning and management of protected areas and to strengthen the potential development of these areas

Protected areas have grown into importance since the second half of the 20th Century. Traditionally their functions have been limited within their administrative boundaries however, after the Durban 5th World Parks Congress held in 2003, the objective of extending the benefits of nature conservation to outside boundaries was established. This article presents the declaration of two protected areas that were raised in 1987 in order to deal with the negative effects caused by demographic and tourist pressures on a relatively large territory, the island of Tenerife.

Abstract: The present paper focuses on the presentation of a transdisciplinar methodology of analysis of the ‘vertical connectivity’ (human society-landscape interaction) that is being developed with the collaboration of the different teams participating in the study for the elaboration of the Natural Resources Planning for the proposal of creation of a National Park in the island of Fuerteventura. The proceeding tries to es ta blish by a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques the formal rela tion between cartesian landscape and socioeconomy with the aim of explaining the im pli cations of the actual socioeconomic changes in the maintenance of landscape. Fuerteventura’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism, and precisely because of that, it is having rapid socioeconomic changes. The proceeding has not been totally realized yet in this context, but will be exposed a part of the results obtained so far on the analysis of the socioeconomic characteristics of Fuerteventura.
